About Teeth Whitening

The process of teeth whitening or bleaching is designed to make teeth look whiter. There are numerous methods to choose from, such as over-the-counter toothpastes, rinses, strips, gels, professional treatments, and home kits. However, it's crucial to understand that the safest and most effective teeth whitening systems are those of professional strength, offered by dentists. These systems contain a higher concentration of whitening ingredients and are administered under supervision. While over-the-counter products might be effective for healthy teeth and gums, they could potentially cause harm if there are existing dental problems.

How does teeth whitening work?

Whitening products primarily fall into two categories: those containing peroxide-based bleaching agents and whitening toothpastes or dentifrices. Most whitening systems within the peroxide-based bleaching agents category utilize either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the key ingredient.

The potency, efficacy, and safety of the whitening system are determined by the concentration of these ingredients. The way teeth whitening systems function is by instigating a chemical reaction between the bleaching agent and the discolored molecules, which subsequently breaks up and eliminates stains and discoloration.

Steps to Follow and Expectations After a Teeth Whitening Procedure

Here are some suggestions to optimize the results of a teeth whitening procedure:
  1. Be mindful of what you eat and drink, especially in the first 48 hours after an in-office treatment. The protective layer of your teeth takes a couple of days to reestablish itself, so avoid deeply colored foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. This includes coffee, red wine, dark soft drinks, teas, berries, grapes, chocolate, and other darkly colored foods.
  2. Avoid smoking, as it stains and yellows your teeth. If you have just had your teeth whitened, refrain from smoking for at least the first couple of days. Quitting or smoking less frequently will not only benefit the appearance of your smile but also your oral health and overall well-being.
  3. It is normal to experience some sensitivity to cold and hot for a couple of days after the procedure. This discomfort usually subsides, but you can take over-the-counter pain medication and use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to alleviate any discomfort.
  4. Keep in mind that the results of teeth whitening procedures vary from patient to patient. The original shade of your teeth, diet, and oral habits can influence both short-term and long-term results. Additionally, teeth whitening procedures do not change the color of existing fillings, crowns, bridgework, or dental bonding. If this is a concern, we can discuss replacing a restoration.
  5. To maintain the results of treatment, practice proper oral hygiene and routine dental care. We can also provide a take-home whitening system for periodic touch-ups if needed.
